How Does 22 Team Double-Elimination Tournament Work?
A 22 team double-elimination tournament consists of three brackets:
Winner’s Bracket
It uses a structure similar to a single-elimination bracket for 22 teams, with multiple rounds and matchups determining which teams advance. The main difference is that a loss in this bracket doesn’t result in immediate elimination; defeated teams drop into the losers’ bracket, where they have a second chance to stay in the competition.
Loser’s Bracket
There is another chance to stay in the competition. A team that wins all of its matches here can advanceand secure a place in the finals.
Finals
In a 22 team tournament, the finals start with a matchup between the winner of the losers’ bracket and the team that most recently dropped from the winners’ bracket. The loser of this game takes 3rd place, while the winner moves on to compete against the winners’ bracket champion in the Grand Final to decide 1st and 2nd place.
If the undefeated winners’ bracket team wins the Grand Final, they are declared the tournament champion. If they lose, handing them their first defeat, a deciding Grand Final Reset match is played to determine the ultimate winner.
Our tournament app handles the entire process automatically, so you can focus on the games without worrying about tracking brackets or results.
Seeding
You can select between seeded, blind draw, or manual pairing for the initial round:
- seeded: Higher-seeded teams are positioned to avoid facing each other until the later rounds.
- blind draw: Teams are shuffled and matched up entirely at random.
- manual seeding: Matchups follow the entry order, with byes automatically included when needed to keep the bracket balanced.
Compared to other Tournament Formats
A 22 team double-elimination tournament strikes a strong balance between single-elimination and a full round-robin in terms of time and fairness. It runs longer than a single-elimination format but finishes sooner than a complete round robin, allowing them to remain in the competition after one loss.
| Format | Total games | Games per team | Rounds | Fairness | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round Robin | 231 | 21 | 21 | Everyone plays everyone | Best for leagues |
| Single Elimination | 21 | 1–4 | 4 | Harsh cutoff | Best for quick events |
| Double Elimination | 42–43 | 2–8 | 8 | More forgiving | Popular in esports |
| Swiss System | 44 | 4 | 4 | Balanced, flexible | Chess, card games |
