What Is a 3 Game Guarantee Tournament?
3 game guarantee is based on a double-elimination format, but with extra games for participants who would otherwise stop playing after 2 losses. It guarantees what each team will play at least 3 games during the tournament.
How Does a 3 Game Guarantee Bracket Work?
Pairing
Initially, participants can be paired in any way:
- seeded: in this case, strongest will meet later in the tournament for fairness
- blind draw: pairs are formed randomly
- manual: participants are paired manually
Winners Bracket
After initial pairing, all teams start in the winners bracket. When a team loses, it’s moved to the losers bracket.
Losers Bracket
If the team loses for the second time, it will get into “Guarantee bracket”, while in double-elimination tournament it would have leave the tournament.
Guarantee Bracket
This is where teams who lost both of their prior games get to play for the 3rd time during the tournament.
Grand Final
This is same as in double elimination: the winners for both winners and losers bracket meet. If the winner of winners bracket wins, they become the champions. If not, there will be a second game between them called the “grand final reset”.
Grand Final Reset
This is an optional game that happens only if the winner of the winners bracket loses in the finals. Whoever wins with game will be the champion.
Why Use a 3 Game Guarantee Format?
Most of time this format is used when organizers want more play time for participants and spectators: it gives more value for entry fees and tickets. Other than that, this is the same as double-elimination.
However, organizers still need to consider that such tournaments will take longer and are harder to schedule comparing to a knockout tournament or double-elimination.
3 Game Guarantee vs Double Elimination
3gg format is a based on double-elimination, but adds an extra consolation (or guarantee) bracket for those 3rd games.
