How Does 14 Team Double-Elimination Tournament Work?
A 14 team double-elimination tournament consists of three primary brackets:
Winner’s Bracket
For a 14 team double-elimination tournament, the winners’ bracket works much like a standard single-elimination bracket for 14 teams, but with an extra entry to balance the bracket. Some teams may receive a first-round bye, and the bracket plays out over multiple rounds as undefeated teams advance.
The difference is that when they lose in this bracket, they drop off to the loser’s bracket.
Loser’s Bracket
In a 14 team double-elimination tournament, the losers’ bracket gives teams another chance after their first loss: if they win all games in this bracket, they will get to play in the finals!
Finals
In a 14 team tournament, the finals begin with a matchup between the last team remaining in the losers bracket and the most recent team eliminated from the winners bracket. The team that loses this match takes 3rd place, while the winner moves on to the Grand Final to face the undefeated winners’ bracket champion for 1st and 2nd place.
The Grand Final features that team against the undefeated winners’ bracket champion, deciding who finishes 1st and 2nd overall.
Our app automatically manages this scenario and updates the bracket without you needing to track anything manually.
Seeding
You can select between seeded, blind draw, or manual pairing for the initial round:
- seeded: Top players will meet later in the tournament.
- blind draw: The teams will get shuffled and randomly paired.
- manual seeding: It would be the entered order for players, with the last ones assigned byes (if necessary).
Compared to other Tournament Formats
An 14 team double-elimination tournament provides a solid middle ground between single elimination and a full round robin. It runs longer than a single-elimination format, but gives teams a more balanced opportunity by allowing them to remain in contention after one loss.
| Format | Total games | Games per team | Rounds | Fairness | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round Robin | 91 | 13 | 13 | Everyone plays everyone | Best for leagues |
| Single Elimination | 13 | 1–4 | 4 | Harsh cutoff | Best for quick events |
| Double Elimination | 26–27 | 2–8 | 8 | More forgiving | Popular in esports |
| Swiss System | 28 | 4 | 4 | Balanced, flexible | Chess, card games |
