How Does 20 Team Double-Elimination Tournament Work?
A 20 team double-elimination tournament consists of three primary brackets:
Winner’s Bracket
In a 20-team tournament, the overall layout follows a single-elimination bracket for 20 teams, with multiple rounds and matchups used to determine which teams advance.
That said, a loss in the winners’ bracket doesn’t end a team’s run. Teams that are defeated there drop into the losers’ bracket, where they get another opportunity to stay in the competition and possibly fight their way back to the finals.
Loser’s Bracket
In a 20 team double-elimination tournament, the losers’ bracket offers teams a second opportunity after their first defeat. Any team that continues to win on this side can battle through the bracket and earn a spot in the finals.
Finals
In a 20 team tournament, the finals kick off with a matchup between the last remaining team from the losers bracket and the team that most recently dropped from the winners bracket. The team that loses this match finishes in 3rd place, while the winner advances to the Grand Final to face the undefeated winner of the winners’ bracket for the title.
If the winners’ bracket team is beaten in the Grand Final, its first loss of the tournament, a Grand Final Reset match is played to decide the champion.
Our tournament app handles this entire process automatically, keeping the bracket current and tracking results so you don’t have to manage anything manually.
Seeding
You can select seeded, blind draw, or manual pairing for the initial round:
- seeded: Best-ranked players will meet later in the tournament.
- blind draw: The players will get shuffled and paired randomly.
- manual seeding: Teams can be paired in the order entered, with the last ones assigned byes (if necessary).
Compared to other Tournament Formats
Double elimination tournament format for 20 teams is somewhere between the round robin and single elimination. It takes longer than single elimination, is quicker than round robin, and is fairer than single elimination.
