How Does 26 Team Double-Elimination Tournament Work?

A 26 team double-elimination tournament consists of three brackets:

Winner’s Bracket

For a 26 team double-elimination tournament, the winners’ bracket works much like a standard single-elimination bracket for 26 teams, but with an extra entry to balance the bracket. Some teams may receive a first-round bye, and the bracket plays out over multiple rounds as undefeated teams advance.

The difference is that when they lose in this bracket, they drop off to the loser’s bracket.

Loser’s Bracket

In a 26 team double-elimination tournament, the losers’ bracket gives teams another chance after their first loss: if they win all games in this bracket, they will get to play in the finals!

Finals

In a 26 team tournament, the finals start with a matchup between the winner of the losers’ bracket and the team that most recently fell from the winners’ bracket. The loser of this game finishes in 3rd place, while the winner moves on to face the winners’ bracket champion in the Grand Final to decide 1st and 2nd place.

If the undefeated winners’ bracket team wins the Grand Final, they are declared the tournament champion. If they are defeated, marking their first loss of the event, a deciding Grand Final Reset match is played to determine the overall winner.

Our tournament app handles this entire process automatically, so you can focus on the games without having to manage brackets or follow results yourself.

Seeding

You can select between seeded, blind draw, or manual pairing for the initial round:

  • seeded: Higher-ranked teams are positioned so they won’t face each other until the later rounds.
  • blind draw: The participants will get shuffled and paired randomly.
  • manual seeding: Teams are paired according to the order they’re entered, with byes added as needed to balance the bracket.

Compared to other Tournament Formats

Double elimination tournament format for 26 teams is somewhere in between the round robin and single elimination in terms of time needed and fairness: it takes longer than single elimination and is quicker than round robin, and is more fair than single elimination.
