How Does 4 Team Double Elimination Tournament Work?
A 4 team double-elimination tournament is made up of three main brackets:
Winner’s Bracket
It follows the same structure as a single elimination bracket for 4 teams and operates in a similar manner, featuring 2 rounds and 3 matches. The key difference is that teams that lose in this bracket move down into the losers’ bracket instead of being eliminated outright.
Loser’s Bracket
In this bracket, teams get a second opportunity. By winning all of their matches here, a team can earn a spot in the finals.
Finals
The finals begin with a matchup between the winner of the losers’ bracket and the team that just lost in the winners’ bracket. The loser of this match will finish in 3rd place, while the winner will advance to face the winner of the winners’ bracket in the Grand Final, which determines 1st and 2nd place.
If the winners’ bracket team loses the Grand Final, its first loss, a deciding Grand Final Reset match is played, and our app handles the entire process automatically.
Seeding
For a 4 team tournament, you can choose how matchups are set for the opening round:
- seeded: Higher-ranked teams are placed so they won’t meet until later rounds.
- random draw: All teams are shuffled and paired at random.
- manual setup: Teams are matched in the order they’re entered, with byes added if needed.
This flexibility allows you to start the tournament exactly as you want.
Compared to other Tournament Formats
A 4 team double elimination tournament strikes a balance between single elimination and round robin. It runs longer than a single-elimination format but finishes faster than a full round robin, while giving teams a fairer chance by allowing one loss before elimination.
| Format | Total games | Games per team | Rounds | Fairness | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round Robin | 6 | 3 | 3 | Everyone plays everyone | Best for leagues |
