How Does 5 Team Double Elimination Tournament Work?
A 5 team double-elimination tournament is made up of three main brackets:
Winner’s Bracket
Structure is similar to a single elimination bracket for 5 teams, with multiple rounds and matches to determine who advances.
The teams that lose in this bracket aren’t eliminated immediately; they drop into the losers’ bracket for another chance to stay in the tournament.
Loser’s Bracket
Winning all matches here allows a team to advance and secure a place in the finals.
Finals
The finals start with a match between the losers’ bracket winner and the team that just dropped from the winners’ bracket. The loser of that match takes 3rd place, while the winner moves on to the Grand Final to face the winners’ bracket champion for 1st and 2nd. If the winners’ bracket team wins the Grand Final, they become the tournament champion. If they lose, giving them their first loss, a final deciding match called a Grand Final Reset is played.
Our tournament app handles this entire process automatically, so everything runs smoothly without any extra work.
Seeding
For a 5 team tournament, you can decide how the first round matchups are arranged:
- seeded: Top-ranked teams are positioned so they avoid facing each other until later rounds.
- random draw: All teams are shuffled and paired randomly.
- manual setup: Teams are paired in the order you enter them, with byes assigned if necessary.
Compared to other Tournament Formats
A 5 team double-elimination tournament offers a middle ground between single elimination and round robin in terms of duration and fairness. It takes more time, but it is quicker than a full round robin.
| Format | Total games | Games per team | Rounds | Fairness | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round Robin | 10 | 4 | 5 | Everyone plays everyone | Best for leagues |
| Single Elimination | 4 | 1–2 | 2 | Harsh cutoff | Best for quick events |
| Double Elimination | 8–9 | 2–4 | 4 | More forgiving | Popular in esports |
| 3-game guarantee | 9–10 | 3–4 | 5 | Minimum 3 games each | All participants will play at least 3 games. |
| Swiss System | 4 | 2 | 2 | Balanced, flexible | Chess, card games |
