How Does 7 Team Double Elimination Tournament Work?
A 7 team double-elimination tournament is organized around three main brackets:
Winner’s Bracket
The tournament structure is similar to a single-elimination bracket for 7 teams, with multiple rounds and games to determine who advances.
The teams that are not eliminated immediately can drop into the losers’ bracket for a second chance to stay in the tournament.
Loser’s Bracket
There is another chance to stay in the competition. A team that wins all of its matches here can advanceand secure a place in the finals.
Finals
In a 7 team tournament, the losers’ bracket winner plays the team that just fell from the winners’ bracket, with the loser finishing 3rd and the winner advancing to the Grand Final against the winners’ bracket champion for 1st and 2nd place. If the winners’ bracket team loses the Grand Final, its first defeat, a deciding Grand Final Reset match is played to determine the champion.
Our tournament app manages this entire process automatically, so you don’t have to track matchups or results.
Seeding
For a 7 team tournament, you can decide how the first-round matchups are created:
- seeded: Top-ranked teams are placed so they don’t meet until the later stages.
- random draw: All teams are mixed and paired randomly.
- manual setup: Teams are matched in the order they’re entered, with byes assigned if necessary.
This gives you flexibility to start the tournament in the way that suits you best.
Compared to other Tournament Formats
There is a good balance between a 7 team double-elimination tournament and round robin. It takes more time than a single-elimination format but is quicker than a complete round robin, while giving teams a fairer opportunity by allowing one loss before elimination.
| Format | Total games | Games per team | Rounds | Fairness | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round Robin | 21 | 6 | 7 | Everyone plays everyone | Best for leagues |
| Single Elimination | 6 | 1–3 | 3 | Harsh cutoff | Best for quick events |
| Double Elimination | 12–13 | 2–6 | 6 | More forgiving | Popular in esports |
