What is a Double-Elimination Tournament?
Double-elimination is a type of elimination (or knockout) tournament where participants leave the competition upon two loses (comparing to one in single-elimination format).
After a participant loses their first game, they still have a chance to win the tournament if they beat everyone in all their next games.
Advantages
- It’s fairer than single-elimination: one bad game does not eliminate participants form the tournament
- More “skill-accurate”
- Participants get involved in the tournament for at least 2 games
Disadvantages
- Takes longer than single-elimination: almost twice as many games
- Harder to plan and schedule manually
How Does a Double-Elimination Tournament Work?
The principles are very similar to the single-elimination format, but there’re two main brackets: winner’s and loser’s. The winners of these two brackets meet in the Grand Final game.
Pairing
The initial pairing is exactly the same as in the single-elimination:
- Seeded: participants are ranked by their skills, and the bracket is built so that the strongest ones meet later in the tournament
- Blind draw: participants are mixed and paired randomly
- Manual: they start in the manually assigned pairs
Winner’s Bracket
The tournament starts in the winner’s bracket, which is the exact one as in single-elimination. In each game, the winner advances to the next winner’s round while the loser drops into loser’s bracket.
Loser’s Bracket
In the loser’s bracket, If the participant loses their second game, they get eliminated from the tournament. The one who wins all games in the loser’s bracket, gets the chance to win the tournament in the Grand Final.
Grand Final
In the Grand Finals, the winners of winner’s and loser’s brackets meet. If the winner of the winner’s bracket wins, they are announced as the tournament champion.
Grand Final Reset
If the winner of the loser’s bracket wins in first final game, there will be a second final game called “Grand Final Reset”. The winner of this game is considered a champion.
Rankings
In double-elimination, first 4 places are determined automatically:
- 1st place: the winner of the Grand Final or Grand Final Reset (if played)
- 2nd place: the loser of the Grand Final or Grand Final Reset (if played)
- 3rd place: the loser of the Losers’ Final
- 4th place: the loser of the Loser’s Bracket last game

Double-elimination format has almost twice as many games in total comparing to single-elimination:

Double-Elimination vs Single-Elimination vs Round Robin
Double-elimination tournament format is good middle ground if you want both the speed of single-elimination and the fairness of round robin: it gives everyone a second chance and provides clear 1-4 places in the end. It works best for competitive tournaments, esports and club championships.
