How does Tennis Round Robin Tournament Work?
A tennis round robin tournament is a format where each player or doubles team meets every other opponent at least once. It is designed for fairness and guaranteed playtime and is common in clubs, schools, and league stages before finals.
Types of tennis round robin
- Single round robin: each opponent once. Example with 6 players: 15 total matches
- Double round robin: each opponent twice; often used in season-style leagues
- Doubles round robin: pairs vs pairs on the doubles court
- Mixed doubles round robin: male and female players paired on each team
- Switch (or rotating) doubles: partners rotate every round; points tracked per player
Scoring, Standings & Tiebreakers
In standard tennis competitions the score is made of best of 3 sets. Normally 1-3 points is awarded per win, 0 for loss and, optionally, 1 for a tie.
Common tiebreakers are: head-to-head result, set difference, game difference, total games won.
