How Does a 30 Team Double-Elimination Tournament Work?

A 30 team double-elimination tournament consists of three brackets:

Winner’s Bracket

In a 30 team tournament, the format closely resembles a single-elimination bracket for 30 teams, with multiple rounds and matchups determining which teams advance.

A defeat in the winners’ bracket doesn’t result in immediate elimination. Teams that lose drop into the losers’ bracket, giving them another opportunity to continue competing and potentially fight their way back to the finals.

Loser’s Bracket

In a 30 team double-elimination tournament, the losers’ bracket gives teams another chance after their first loss. Teams that keep winning on this side can work their way through the bracket and secure a place in the finals.

Finals

In a 30 team tournament, the finals begin with a matchup between the last team remaining in the losers bracket and the most recent team eliminated from the winners bracket. The team that loses this match takes 3rd place, while the winner moves on to the Grand Final to face the undefeated winners’ bracket champion for 1st and 2nd place.

If the winner of the Grand Final game has not lost, they’re the champion of the tournament!

Our tournament app handles all of the above automatically, updating the bracket and tracking results so you don’t have to manage anything manually.

Seeding

You can select between seeded, blind draw, or manual pairing for the initial round:

  • seeded: Higher-ranked players will meet later in the tournament.
  • blind draw: The participants will get shuffled and paired randomly.
  • manual seeding: The teams will be paired in the order entered, with the last ones assigned byes (if necessary).

Compared to other Tournament Formats

A 30 team double-elimination tournament strikes a balance between single elimination and a full round robin. It takes more time than a single-elimination format but concludes faster than a complete round robin, while giving each team a fairer chance by allowing them to stay in the competition even after one loss.
